Subject:

Failure of Westinghouse BFD Relays IE Bulletin 79-25 discusses failure of Westinghouse type BFD control relays. The relay contains an epoxy adhesive which can soften and flow from the heat of a normally energized coil. The adhesive binds the relay armature in the energi:cd position, preventing it from dropping out.

Some models of the replacement relay, type NBFD, possess insuffi-cient overtravel (the armature does not move far enough to make all the contacts).

At Enrico Fermi 2, Westinghouse type BFD relays are not employed nor are they planned to be for safety related systems; therefore, no cor-rective action is required.
