Subject:
Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Units Nos. 1 & 2, Dockets Nos. 50-317 & 50-318 Charginst Puen Pine Vibration
Reference:
NRC letter dated 10/18/79 from Mr. R. W. Reid to Mr. A. E. Lundvall, Jr., same subject.
Gentlemen:
The referenced letter forwarded the NRC's Safety Evaluation with respect to our scheduled modifications to the Calvert Cliffs charging pump suction and discharge lines. In the Safety Evaluation, it is stated that engineering work associated with the modifications vill be completed by December 1979, that the modifications vill be completed during the Spring 1980 and Fall 1980 refueling outages for Units 1 and 2, respectively, and that interin operation of both Units is acceptable on this basis.
This is to inform you that engineering associated with the modifications is now comolete, but the scheduled refueling outage for Calvert Cliffs Unit No. 1 has been tentatively slipped until this Fall.
This slippage is the result of several factors, the major ones of which are 1) the late restart following the last refueling outage and 2) the recent power distribution anomoly which has resulted in an extended period of reduced power operation with the resultant decreased fuel burnup.
Consequently, since the NRC Safety Eycluation concluded that operation of Unit No. 2 until the Fall 1980 refueling outage was acceptable, we propose a similar schedule for Unit No. 1, that is, continued operation until the next scheduled refueling outage (tentatively Fall 1980), ar, which time the modifications vill be made.
Please inform us if you find this new schedule to be unacceptable.
Very truly V9'urs, L.!
