This refers to your application dated October 2,1979, requesting an amendment to the Model No. 181361 packaging.

Your application indicated that the proposed cesium-137 source capsule does not qualify as special form.

In order to consider the use of cesium-137 in normal form as you have requested, we will need the information identified in the enclosure to this letter.

Please advise us within (30) days from the date of this letter when this information will be provided.

Eight copies of all additional information and drawings should be provided.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, we will be pleased to meet with you and your staff.

Identify the containment barrier and provide drawings (i.e., dimensions, materials of construction, welds, etc.) of the containment barrier,'if appropriate.

2.

Develop a containment acceptance criteria for normal conditions of transport and accident damage conditions for the normal form shipments.

Show that the sensitivities and testing schedules are adequate for safe use of the packages.

Regulatory Guide 7.4 may be used for periodic testing.

For assembly verification it is recommended that a test of sufficient sensitivity to limit the maximum release to a type A quantit{

in 10 days is used, however, a leak test sensitivity greater than lx10-3 at-cm /sec, would not be required.

The minimum sensitivity of 1x10-1 3

at-cm /sec (air at 1 atm and 25*C leaking to a 10-2 at ambient) as specified in ANSI N14.5 should be met.
