Subject:
Zion Station Units 1 and 2 Protection Against Dropped Rods NRC Docket Nos. 50-295 and 50-304
Dear Dr. Denton:
On Monday, November 19, 1979, the NRC Staff met in Bethesda with Westinghouse and numerous utility representatives including Commonwealth Edison Company to discuss Westinghouse Electric Corporation's Notification of Reportable Item (Dropped Rod).
From this discussion, the potential safety concerns associated with multiple dropped rods could be alleviated on an interim basis by prohibiting automatic rod control operation above 90% of rated power with Control Bank D (CBD) below 216 steps withdrawn.
As a result, the NRC Staff required within 48 hours5.555556e-4 days
0.0133 hours
7.936508e-5 weeks
1.8264e-5 months
notification of compliance with this interim fix.
On November 21, 1979, verbal notification was made to the NRC Staff that Commonwealth Edison had implemented the proposed fix.
This letter provides formal confirmation that the Zion Station procedures have been modified to prohibit automatic rod control operation above 90% of rated power with CBD below 216 steps withdrawn.
Please address any questions that you might have concerning this matter to this office.
One (1) signed original and thirty-nine (39) copies of this letter are provided for your use.
Very truly yours, b.
