PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION November 7, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PNO-II-79-27 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staf f as of this date FACILITY:

Alab ea Power Company Farley, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-348 Dothan, Alabana

SUBJECT:

FIRE IN COOLING TOWER A fire occurred in a Unit No. I cooling tower at 1:30 p.m., CST, on Novenber 7, 1979.

The fire was extinguished by plant personnel with off site assistance in approxicately 30 minutes.

The plant is operating at 48% power.

The operation of the plant was not affected by the fire.

The cooling tower is redwood con-structica with forced draf t fans.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time, and is under investigation by the licensce.

Local media interest appears limited.

No press release is planned by the lir.cosce, but the licensee is responding to media inquiries.

A press release by the NRC is under review.

The State of Alabama has been notified.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephooc from the licensee at 2:30 EST on November 7, 1979.
