%'..u...f November 7, 1979 MEMORANDUM FOR:

Harold Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation FROM:

John Collins, Deputy Director TMI Support

SUBJECT:

ESTIMATED DOSES FROM DISCHARGE OF PROCESSED WATER FROM EPICOR-II In response to your request I had RAB calculate the estimated dose via the drinking water pathway if the first 13,000 gallons of water processed from EPICOR-II were to be discharged to the river. The effluent release valves assume a dilution in the discharge pipe of 4

approximately 4 X 10 which is the nomial dilution flow from TMI.

However, it did not take credi: for any further dilution in the river. The attached Table I shows the calculated doses for total body and critical organ. Thene calculated values can be compared to the Appendix I values of 3 mrem /yr for total body, and 10 mrem /yr for the critical organ.

In addition, you asked if it would be possible to reprocess the water through EPICOR-II to achieve any further clean up.

As you can see from Table 2, the effluent concentrations for all nuclides identified were below the LLD (lower limit of detection) for the particular analysis.

Running the water through the second time would not show anything except that the' concentrations are still below the LLD.

On this basis I see no justification to request the licensee to reprocess the water.

Should future batches of water show values above the LLD's, then at that time we will consider requesting the licensee to perform this action.
