Hendrie, Deputy Director for Technical Review Directorate of Licensing TECIDiICAL ASSIST /J;CE PIQUEST FOR PIVIEW OF PROPOS-REPAIR PROCEDUPJS FOR B&U CONTROL ROD DRIVE MOTOR TUDE DISCONTINUITIES Babcock & U ncox (B&U) informed the AEC at a May 11, 1972 meeting in Betheads th c many of the control rod drive (CRD) motor tubes on all plants hav.$; L&U NSSS are suspect of containing hot tears on the inside to e curface. DSU is currently assoccin3 the need for repair or replacement of conc of these CRD assemblics. They tentatively propoced several nothods for repairing these CRD motor tubes some of which would involve exemptions from ASME code requirements. Other poscibilitics are to lower the design requirements for these motor tubes or present a f!acture mechanics analysis to show the acceptability of the existing rotor tubes with these discontinuitics. The assistance of the Mcchanical Engineering Branch in the review of th..,.agoacd repair procedurcs and design requirements for B&U control rod drive motor tubes is requested.

In this regard, it is also requested that the Mechanical Engineering Branch be represented at the June 6, 1972 meeting in Lancaster, Ohio at Diamond Power's CRD manufacturing facility.
