'N'dfLj In response to your letter of August 23,197h, requesting '<etropolitan Edison Ccepany to evaluate the design and performance of spent fuel handling systems in the Three Mile Island Unit 1 facility, the folleving information and schedule is provided.
At present Three Mile Island Unit i does not centain spent er new fuel assemblies in the fuel stcrage pcci nor have we ec=pleted centract negotiations with a spent fuel transportatica and reprocessing firm.
Additionally, we do not anticipate having spent fuel in the fui storage facility until the latter part of 1976.
Metropolitan Edison Ccepany is presently s.aducting a ec=plete analysis and evaluation of the Unit 1 fuel handling system and associated eccpenents including a review of the original specifications and design criteria applicable at the time of construction of the plant.
It is anticipated that this desien review in acccrdance with your letter of August 23,197h, vill be ec=pleted en January 17, 1975 and that an appropriate FSAR change vill be submitted by February 21, 1975 in accordance with your request. As a ecnsequence of this review and analysis, if any system or plant =cdifications are required, necessary action in acecrdance with ICCFR50 Section 50 59 vill be implenented at that time.
j Until such time as this evaluation 1td analysis is ecmplete and any cystem redificaticns necessitated as a consequence cf this analysis are c=pleted, no fuel cask vill be handled in and around the fuel pocl when spent fuel is stored in the pocl.
