MINUTES OF i;RC/ DOE MEETING ON ENVIR0tiMENTAL SURVEY PLANS FOR HIGH-LEVEL WASTE REPOSITORIES On Wednesday, May 23, 1979, a meeting was held in Silver Spring with the U. S. Department of Energy (.00E), and their contractors.
This meeting was the third in a series of meetings which were initiated on February 6,1979.
The purpose of this meeting was to provide the NRC staff and our contractors with a better understanding of the environtrental surveys being conducted by DOE for selecting a repository site.

A copy of the meeting notice was placed in the NRC public document room at 1717 H Street and was sent to those individuals who had requested that they be notified of NRC/ DOE meetings on waste management matters.
During the course of the meeting, DOE provided an overview of the envirer. mental survey program for repository sites.
Detailed discussions of environmental plans f.or several regions within the continental United States were presented.
In addition, the environmental programs for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and the Basalt Waste Isolation Project at Ha'nford, Washington, were also described.
Attached is a complete set of the vu-graphs which were presented during the.
meeting. These vu-graphs are fairly self-explanatory and provide reasonably thorough insights into the topics discussed during the meeting.
The next meeting between DOE and the NRC has not yet been scheduled. When a topic and date have been selected, a notice of such a meeting will be placed in the public document room.
