b g3 Docket No. 50-289 R. C. DeYoung, Assistant Director for Pressurized Water Reactors, L TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE REQUEST FOR REVIEW OF THREE MILE ISLAND STATION, UNIT 1, COMBUSTIBLE GAS CONTROL SYSTEM (TAR-347)

Plant Name: Three Mile Island, Unit 1 Licensing Stage: OL Docket N o. 50-289 Ecsponsible Branch & Project Manager: FVR f4: H. Faulzner Requested Completion Date: January 18, 1973 Review Status: Complete The subject Technical Assistanca Request, received January 16, 1973, requested our assistanca in the reevaluatica of the combustible gas control system because the applicant reported a change is the aluatinum content of equipment located within the containment.

In Amendment 35 (Supplement 1, Part II to the FSAR), dated December 19, 1972, the applicant revised the. mount of aluminum present in the contafn=ent from 54.1 lbs. to 234 lbs. of aluminum.

Based on this revision, we have reanalyzed the requirements for hydrogen purge. The exposed aluminum surface area was assumed to increase proportionately to the weight increase. This assumption was recommended by the Project Manager due to the lack of information concerning the nature of the increase.

Our calculations indicate that purging would be initiated 25 days af ter the accident at a constant rate of 15 scfm to maintain the hydrogen concentration below 4% by volume (flammable limit). This is a revision from the originally conputed time period of 30 days with 54.1 lb. aluminuct content.
