THRU: Charles G. Long, Chief, PWR Project Branch 2 [/ [ L Division of Reactor Licensing TELECON WITH N. NEWMAFK, W. HALL, AND J. PROCTOR, REGARDING THREE MILE ISLAND UNIT 1 (DOCKET 50-289)

A conference call with Newmark, Hall, Proctor, and D. F. Ross was held on May 19, 1970. The purpose was to discuss the interaction of Proctor's ef forts with Newmark and Hall on the aircraf impact design aspect of TMI #1.

Dr. Newmark cited four main categories of impact design review:

1.

Modeling of a multi-degree of freedom system into a single degree-of-freedom model system for impact loads.

2.

Sensitivity to parameter variations, e.g. airplane frontal area.

3.

Missile penetration formulation as a function of a system already loaded in flexure.

4.

Impact ef fect on internal systems and components.

It was mutually agreed that Proctor will do item (1), Newmark and liall the rest.

Proctor has some reservations on the use by Met-Ed of dynamic properties (yield, ultimate strength) especially for these low strain rates. He is generally satisfied with the load time curve in the FSAR.

Proctor and Newmark & Hall may exchange correspondence (copies to Regulatory) on these matters.
