M PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION August 8, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-319 This Dreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or Dublic interest sianificance.
The information Dresented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
SHIPMENT OF COMPACTED LOW SPECIFIC ACTIVITY (LSA) TRASH FROM TMI UNIT 2 On August 7. 1979, 157 55 ga.llon drums of LSA compacted trash from TMI Unit 2 was shipped via Tri-State Motor Carrier to the Nuclear Engineer Company's (NECO) Hanford, Washington burial facility.
IE inspectors surveyed the shipment cricr to departure.
The shipment contains a total activity of about 3.5 Curies.
This is the first waste shipment from Unit 2 since the March 28, 1979 accident.
Media interest is expected because of public sensitivity to the Three Mile Island activities.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed.
A press release is planned by the licensee.
N.C, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by a telephone call from the IE Resident Office Staff at TMI at 1:00 p.m. on August 6, 1979.
