Dear Ms. Scanlan:

Senator Boschwitz has contacted me concerning my unfortunate reference to blind people during the hectic period immediately follcwing the accidcut at the Three Mile Island :;uclear Plant.

As you can imagine, I have been besieged, and properly so I might add, by letters for having r:ada use of an old and inaccurate cliche I

certainly regret having offended pcople with a sight impairment and have attEinpted to explain the circumstances in the attached copy of ny letter to the Radio Information Center for the Blind.

I would appreciate your passing along to your cembers my most sincere apologies for this unfortunate slip of the tongue.

Sincerely, l

Mr. James P. Sued Executive nirector Radio Information Center for the Blind 919 Walnut Street Philadelpnia, Pennsylvania 19i07 Dear M.

Swed:

I have jcur letter cf /gril 18tn concerning rij unfortunate reference to blind people and n both chagrined at ny cc. cat and appreciative of your u: ders tending of the circunstances under which I utteruJ the word >.

!W you brow, it was spoken during a period of intense frustration when we were mable to acquire suf ficient infernation to make reasonable decisie:n on the situation at the Three Mile Island i'uclear Plant.

The circum:nc2s existing at that cine have been anply reported in the press,1.;t let re add thet even the press accounts fell shert of expressing ny pers: W exasperation at the events that hed occurred. i'eedless to say, tt.: is still no defense for using the old cliche about being blind.

I note it only to reiterate the situation as it was, and leave it to you to try to understand and forgive a slip of the tongue.

I hope you will forward my cc::arents and apologies to those who I might have offended.

It has bcen an object lesson in the art of thinking before speaking, and I want to assure you again that the quoted state-ment intended no disparagement of anyone

  • ith a sight impairment.

Sincerely, 1
