Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

20555 Sir:

}

By this letter I wish to record my unrestrainable outrage at the 1

paralysis of our government agencies in the face of the energy crisis so apparent since 1973.

The latest -- and by far most insane -- was the reported decision of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to close five nuclear power plants out of concern for consequer.ces of possible earthquake damage.

The benefits of nuclear power are enormous, and the MEDICAL risks now and in the foreseeable futura are neglibible compared to other environmental hazards - such as the cigarette, alcohol, and motor vehicles.

It the ultimate reason for your deicison was NOT medical -

and it CANNDT be - then how can you expect to win credibility and i

public confidence with such bizarre actions?

i Sincerely yours, cs&k,

David E. Drum. M.D., Ph.D.
