71-5916 4 CONDITICNS This certificate is conditional upon the fulfilling of the requirements of Succart 0 of 10 CFR 71, as applicable and the conditions specified in item 5 below.

5. Description of Packaging and Authorized Contents, Model Nurncer, Fissile Class, other Conditions, and

(a) Packaging (1) Model No.:

2501 (2) Description The packaging consists of an interchangeable shielded center section, common top and bottom end sections, and up to two extension sections.

Shielding is provided in the center section by successive layers of iron, lead, and Benelex-70.

Balsa impact limiters are included in the top and bottom section.

Each steel section is bolted to the adjacent section and bolted to a steel I-beam skid-cradle assembly. The cross section geometry is basically octagonal, 48" across the flats.

The length ranges from approximately 12 to 16 feet with a maximum gross weight of 17,450 lbs.

Sources must meet the requirements of special form as defined in 10 CFR 571.4(o).

(2) Maximum quantity of material per package 1,848 curies of PoBe, or Am-Be, or Pu-238-Be* or 13.2 curies of CF-252.

(Heat load generated by the contents should not exceed 60 watts of decay heat.)

  • Plutonium in excess of twenty (20) curies per package must be in the form of metal or metal alloy; or contained within double encapsulated stainless steel source capsules.

Both capsules shall be leak tested independently, and shall show no leakage for a test 3

having a minimum sensitivity of lx10 5 atm-cm /sec (air at 25 C and 1 atm leaking to lx10 2 atm).

(c) Fissile Class For packages containir.g Pu-238.

Fissile Class I 6.

The contents shall be secured in the shielded position of the packaging by the source assembly, and locking device. The source assembly must be of sufficient length and diameter to provide positive positioning of the source in the shielded position.

The nameplates shall be fabricated of materials capable of resisting the fire test of 10 CFR Part 71 and maintain their legibility.

The package authorized by this certificate is hereby approved for use under the general license provisions of 10 CFR 571.12(b).
