SUBJECT:
LICENSEE'S JANUARY 29, 1976 APPLICATION FOR LICENSE AMENDMENT TO PERMIT OPERATION OF YANKEE-ROWE IN THE IDLE LOOP MODE The Yankee-Rowe reactor tripped on January 13, 1976, on loss of flow due to a defect in one of the four main coolant pumps.
The plant Technical Specifications then as now only permit operation of the reactor with 4-loops.
To preclude prolonged shutdown of Yankee-Rowe, Yankee Atomic Electric Company (the licensee) promptly initiated efforts 2
to obtain a replacement pump from another facility.
Concurrently. the licensee submitted the subject application, with supporting evaluation, for NRC approval of operation in the idle loop mode.
This was to be the licensee's interim alternate approach in the event the defective pu.ap could not be replaced within a reasonable period of time.
The licensee was able to replace the defective pump in a timely manner and informed us orally that no further action on their application was required, since operation would be resumed in the authorized 4-loop mode.
Accordingly, the licensee's January 29, 1976 application was considered withdrawn.
