TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY CH ATTANOOGA TENNESSEE 374o1 500C Chestnut Street Tower II February 23, 1979 Mr. Vic Stello, Director Division of Operating Reactors Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Stello:
This report is in response to James P. O'Reilly's letter to H. G. Parris dated February 8, 1979, which enclosed IE Bulletin 79-01.
We have determined that stem-mounted limit switches described in IE Bulletin 79-01 are installed on the MSIV's on Browns Ferry units 1, 2, and 3.
These switches are NAMCO Model SL3-B2W switches which the manufacturer informs us is an earlier model of the present Model EA-700.
The two models are essentially the same and are intended for general purpose application.
The subject switches initiate a scram signal upon closure of the MSIV's, however, they have no control function with regard to the valves' operation.
The reactor protection system input (scram function) from the MSIV switches are not required to operate in a LOCA situation since the same accident signals (high drywell pressure / low water level) which initiate MSIV closure also initiate the scram. The safe operation of the Browns Ferry units is not compromised in any way.
Supplemental information will be provided in the 14-day followup report.
Very truly yours, o
, \\N
