STATUS REPORT NO. 4 TORUS SHELL INDICATION AT THE RING BEAM ATTACHMENT WELD ENLARCEMENT INTRODUCTION As described in the attached report to the Reference 1 letter, the Fermi 2 Torus Modification Program requires that the existing 5/16" fillet veld between the ring girder at each mitered joint and the suppression chamber shell be increased to a 3/4" fillet weld. In the process of inspecting these welds, defects in the torus shell have been determined.

DESCRIPTION OF NON-CONFORMANCE A description of the defects is provided in the attachment to the Reference 1 letter.

CURRENT PROGRESS

1. Weld repair of the relevant indications determined by magnetic particle or liquid penetrant examination methods is in progress.
2. An ultrasonic examination of the completed weld enlargements for all the ring beams is in progress.
3. A metallurgical report compiling the detailed findings and conclusions of Failure Analysis Associates, after ev"luating ten (10) samples, will be available at the site for your review by March 1, 1979.
