NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY THE TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE EVANSTON, ILLINOIS 60201 DEPARTMENT OF ENGINEERING SCIENCis NUCLEAR ENGINLERING PROGRAM AND APPL lED MATHEMATICS January 26, 1979 Mr. Steve Ramos Division of Research Reactor Licensing Nuclear Ecgulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Ramos:

Northwestern University requests the necessary approvals and licenses to reconstruct and operate an AGN-201 Nuclear Training Reactor, as speci-fied in the attached application.

Your review of this application is requested. The AGN-201 Reactor Serial No. 114, is presently located at Oregon State University.

Mr.

Peter Erickson of your staff should have received a decommissioning plan from them earlier this month. We request approval of that plan within six weeks of its receipt so that the reactor tank and control console can be brought to Northwestern and certain non-reactor-related construction can proceed. Furthermore, the OSU license was due to expire this past November.

Expeditious examination of our license application is requested in order to begin construction at the earliest possible date.

We plan to have the reactor ready for training classes by the fall of 1979.

Sincere ly,

Gwdub'/)[
