Dear Mr. Chairman:
This is in response to your letter of October 17 concerning the " Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978." We believe that this enactment is a valuable legislative response to the concerns which the Commission communicated to Congress regarding management and disposal of uranium mill tailings.
We recognize and appreciate the important contributions which your Subcommittee has made in shaping the bill into an effective instrument for remedying past omissions and assuring that further remedial action will not be required in the future. We also appreciate the kind acknowledgement in your letter of the efforts by the flRC and its staff in developing the new Act.
The !!RC staff is now engaged in a detailed study of the new Act so that i
the Commission will be able to exercise our new authority and comply with our new statutory obligations in a timely and effective fashion.
You may be assured that we shell keep the Subcommittee informed of flRC activities in implementing the I.ct.
We look forv;ard to working with you and members of your staff in assuring that the Congressional intent behind the new statute is fully met.
(\\ Sincerely,
