February 6, 1980 Trojan Nuclear Plant Docket 50-344 License NPF-1 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation ATTN:

A. Schwencer, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #1 Division of Operating Reactors U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

20555

Dear Sir:

To assist your Staff in carrying out its responsibility to infom the Atomic Safety & Licensing Board for the Control Building Proceeding of shutdown of the Trojan Nuclear Plant, the following information is provided concerning a Plant shutdown on February 5, 1980.

The Reactor was shutdown by the Reactor Trip System at 3:35 p.m. on February 5, 1980. The Reactor Trip System was actuated automatically due to a false indication that the breaker for one of the Reactor Cool-ant Pumps had opened. This false indication occurred when a momentary ground was inadvertently caused on one of the instrument power circuits by an electrician installing some wires in the Control Room. This problem is not seismic related.

The Plant resumed power operation at approximately 6:00 p.m. on February 5, 1980.

Sincerely, C. Goodwin, Jr.
