Containment Internal Structures Coating INTERIM REPORT 2 DATE: January 30, 1980 PROJECT: Consumers Pcwcr Company Midland Plant Units 1 & 2 Bechtel Job 7220 Thic report updates project engineering's progress in evaluation and action regarding the failure of coatings on concrete, as applied by subcontractor J. L. Manta in the containment building, to maintain adhesion between successive layers of the coating system.
The corrective actions identified in Interim Report 1 are now progressing with a program involving CPCo, Bechtel and Manta. A short update of these programs follows:

- 1. . Quantify Extent of Physical Problem

A preliminary procedure of mapping and adhesion testing is being reviewed and testing vill begin upon completion

- 2. Document Review A preliminary document review is in process. These records are being reviewed to determine batch numbers, application temperatures and time between coats. In addition, the application location for the above variables is being identified for correlation with the
- mapping and adhesion testing from (1) above.

- 3. Material Analysis Retained test samples of the subject coating batches used in containment are undergoing physical tect and analysis to reaffirm acceptability. In addition, the manufacturer's coating application procedures used for past work are to be reviewed and their applicability for use in future work evaluated.
- 4. Coating Acceptance Procedure A procedure is being developed to determine the accept-ability of repaired coatings and original coatings which did not require repair.
The results of Items 1, 2 and 3 will be evaluated to deter-mine the extent and root cause of the subject coating failure.
Following this determination, additional corrective action l steps will be taken as required to preclude recurrance and I repair the problem coating. Steps taken in Item 4 will be used to provide final verification of acceptable adhesion of this coatings system.
The next report is scheduled for March 31, 1980.
