Description of Event

On January 24, 19 80, Stone & Webster reported that equipment qualification review revealed that the service water radiation nonttoring pumps for the recirculation spray beat exchangers (1-SU-P-5,6,7 and S a re not qua li f ied for the integrated dose level which they. could receive following a postu-la ted accident using revised source terns.

Probable Consequences of Occurrence The consequences of this event are linited because the pumps do not pe rfo rm an accident nitigation function but act as a part of a nonttoring circuit.

Redundance can be obtained by use of radiation monitors RM-SW103 and 109 which are available to nonitor activity in the service water systen.

By alternately valving out recicculation spray heat exchangers, these monitors could be used to determine if a specific heat exchanger is leaking.

As a result, the health and safety of the general public were not endangered by this occurrence.

The service water radiation nonitoring sample punps for Unit 2 are identical and therefore similarly a f fected.

Cause of Event

The cause of this discrepancy is that radiation zone naps developed for the louer level of the nain stean valve house using revised source terns ind icate higher radiation levels than previously calculated.

The source of radiation is the a inch safety injection line from the low head safe ty injection pumps to the charging pumps.

Innediate Corrective Action The feasibility of installing shielding around the punps is be ing investigated.

Possible pump relocation is also being considered.

Scheduled Corrective Action The punps will be appropriately nodified as determined by the results of the current investigation.

Actions Taken to Prevent Recurrence No further actions are required.
