3 MEMORANDUM FOR:

Frank Swanberg, Jr., Chief Environmental Effects Research Branch Division of Safeguards, Fuel Cycle and Environmental Research FROM:

Judith D. Foulke Environmental Effects Research Branch Division of Safeguards, Fuel Cycle and Environmental Research

SUBJECT:

RESEARCH REVIEW GROUP MEETING WITH ANL ON DEMPAK (A2059)

On December 10, 1979 M. Ginevan and R. Lundy of the Division of Siological and Medical Research, Argonne National Laboratory, met with NRC staff members from the Radiological Assessments Branch:

F. Congel, R. Gotchy, and E. Branagan, and with J. Foulke of the Environmental Effects Research Branch. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the progress to date on the DEMPAK code and scheduling of products to be delivered to NRC.

The ANL 189 dated August 1979 was discussed in detail as follows:

Stage 1: Basic Demographic Model (a) Monte Carlo Modifications R. Lundy stated that the Fbnte Carlo option for estimating confidence intervals has already been implemented.

(b) Single-Year Projection Intervals R. Gotchy stated that he is not sure this option is needed.

M. Ginevan noted that using this feature would approximate convergence to the continuous case.

(c)

Cohort-Specific Baseline Mortality R. Lundy has not started implementation of this feature.

(d) Cummulative Tabies R. Lundy stated that some work has been done on this feature.

It was decided to finish it after the working version of DEMPAK is ready.

(e) Cohort / Parity Specific Fertility Model R. Lundy has not started implementation of this feature.

(f)

Keyword-Accessible Data Files Because of the features available in the new FORTRAN compiler, this task is nct necessary.

(g) Multiregional Migration Work on this task has been cancelled.

Stage 2: Simple Dose-kesponse Models (a) Radiation Models R. Lundy will implement the risk models from BEIR III by March 1980.

E. Branagan noted that he wants to be able to change the risk coefficients.

He also wants risk coefficients for additional organs.

(b) Air Polluta.

Models Work on this will be suspended, since other agencies should fund development of these models.

Stage 3: Morbidity Projections (a) Specific Models for Cancer R. Lundy stated that this task is essentially complete for morbidity indexed on total mortality irrespective of age at death. Work on morbidity projections indexed on mortality by age at death will be put on long-term hold.

(b) Models for Chronic Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Disease This task will be cancelled.

Stage 4:

Advanced Dose-Response Functions All subtasks will be put on hold until the working version of DEMPAK is ready.

Stage 5: Short-term Effects R. Gotchy stated he probably will not use this feature.

Based on the needs of RAR, the work scope for FY 1980 will be modified and ANL will submit a revisec 189 to reflect these changes. A simplified version of DEMPAK, incorporating both the relative risk and absolute risk 1936 317

Documentation verifying the results obtained using DEMPAK and comparison with other calculations will also be provided.

A NUREG report, documenting the methodology incorporated in DEMPAK and discussing the relevant demographic and epidemiological literature, will be submitted by May 30, 1980.
