Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station, Unit 1 Reportable Item in Accordance wir.h 10CFR50.55(e)

Gentlemen:

The purpose of this letter is to provide the final written report on the item previously identified as " Containment Airlock", which was initially reported in our letter of 8/17/79. This item was identified by the airlock manufacturer, Pittsburgh-DesMoines Steel Company (PDM) in a letter to Region I dated 8/1/79, a copy of which was attached to our initial report. The PDM letter describes how under certain conditions, the airlock door could pos-sibly close without proper latching, thereby violating leaktight integrity of the airlock and consequently of the containment. The action to be taken to correct this condition was also identified in the PDM letter.

A program has been initiated, in conjunction with the manufacturer, to effect corrective repairs in March 1980. This letter, therefore, constitutes our final report on this tem. Records will be available onsite for audit upon completion of the r' airs.
