(Trojan Nuclear Plant)
Docket No. 50-344 (Control Building)
Gentlemen:
Pursuant to the Staff's commitment to provide weekly reports on the status of resolution of open items and completion of the Staff's Safety Evaluation Report (SER) in the referenced proceeding, this constitutes such report for the week ending November 30, 1979.
In the Plant Systems areas of review with regard to the effects of the proposed modification work on the safety of concurrent operation, the Staff has found acceptable the Licensee's final responses, submitted on November 21, 1979, to Plant Systems Branch questions 1 and 2 of September 14 and questions 1, 5 and 6 of September 28, 1979. Accordingly, the unresolved matters to which these ques-tions were directed are tentatively considered to be resolved and those parts of the Staff's SER related to these matters are now being put into final form.
In addition, the Licensee's final response to question 2 of September 29 has been found acceptable as far as it goes although additional information requested in this question is to be provided in a yet-to-be submitted response to another Plant Systems Branch question.
Thus, the response to this question is incomplete at this time and the matter with which it deals (protecting safety-related equip-ment from construction-generated dust and dirt) has not been fully resolved.
The Licensee's final responses to question 4 of September 14 and question 4 of September 28 are still being evaluated.
In addition, responses to question 3 of September 14 and questions 3 and 7 of September 28 have not yet been submitted by the Licensee.
Consequently, the unresolved items to which :.hese questions were directed remain unresolved at this time.
During the past week, the Staff's review and evaluation of the structural aspects of the proposed modifications has been impacted to some extent by the Staff's evaluation of Supplement 1 to Trojan License Event Report (LER) 79-15 on the 1517 294 m 21u ' M
's
. problem involving inadequate design of certain single block and mortared double block walls to withstand reaction forces from piping attached to such walls (LER 79-15 and related information was forwarded to the Licensing Board and parties en November 13, 1979.
Supplement 1 to LER 79-15 and other additional information available to the Staff on the reaction force problem at Trojan is being forwarded to the Board and parties today).
However, to the extent possi-ble the Staff's structural review of the proposed modifications to the Control Building has continued.
The Staff has not yet concluded that the Licensee's November 21, 1979 responses to Staff structural questions 9, 16 and 18 of October 2, 1979 resolve the open items to which these questions were directed.
No additional responses to Staff structural questions have been received.
Sincerely,
/,
