COOLING TOWER WATER FOUND TO CONTAIN AMOEBA ENCEPHALITIS This supplements informatica previously provided in PNO-III-79-3.

'he State of Minnesota Epidemiologist, Division of Conynunicable Disease, was c.ontacted by Region III (Chicago). He stated there should be no public health hazard from the presence of this amoeba in the cooling tower water.

Region Til also contacted the Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, Georgia, and confiraed thic opinion.

The NRC Office of Reguintory Research, Depart:nent of Energy, and the Electric Po.<er Resench institute are sponsoring rescarch at Oak Ridge National Labo-ratory on the presence of biological organisms in power plant cooling water.

This research deterniined that this amoeba is found in essentially all fresh water bodies in the U.S.,

particularly in warm water.

If the amoeba are inhaled through the nose, thr. disease may occur.

The licenser is taking the necessary precautions to minimize exposure to the av.oeha.

The licensee met with the Commissioner of the Minnesota Depar cent of Public Health on September 26, 1979, to discuss this condition and (.Lercine the proper corrective actions to take.

Treatment with cocmon bit. ides is being consideced.

OSHA has been notiiied of this condition.

Based on the information provided above, neither Region III nor the licensee plans to issue a press release.
