Letter from J. D. Leonard, Jr. to Boyce H. Grier Dated May 24,1979 (JAFP 79-259)

Dear Mr. Grier:

As stated in our letter of May 24, 1979, we have received the information regarding reactor vessel weld material from the reactor vendor. Based on the information from the reactor vendor, to the best of present knowledge, the materials used for welds in the FitzPatrick Plant reactor vessel were satisfactory, ie. the FitzPatrick Plant reactor vessel does not contain any welds which are Atypical.

In addition, the vessel manufacturer, Combustion Engineering, Inc., submitted a generic report containing details of their research to the NRC on June 8, 1979 Further General Electric indicated to the FitzPatrick Plant on July 3,1979, that an archival piece of reactor vessel material containing a full penetration weld may be available in their facilities. We have requested that General Electric determine with certainty whether or not this piece of reactor vessel material is essentially identical to the Fi tzPatrick Plant reactor vessel and if so, have requested that the material be shipped to the FitzPatri.ck Plant, if it is determined that the archival piece of reactor vessel material is identical to the FitzPatrick Plant reactor vessel material, we will request that an analysis of the weld material be performed.
