Dear Sir:
In accordance with 10 CFR 50.54(f) and your letter of May 25, 1979, enclosed is the initial information requested (within 20 d;ys of receipt of your letter) on PWR feedwater lines. Although we have also under-taken radiographic examination of the feedwater nozzle to pipe welds for all four steam generators at the Trojan Nuclear Plant, results of this investigation are not yet complete. When we provide the additional information requested by your letter (within 60 days of receipt), we will inform you of the results of this inspection. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely ~, A / J $ W^f' C. Goodwin, Jr. Assistant Vice President Thermal Plant Operation and Maintenance CG/CAZ/4kk3B4 Enclosures c: Mr. Lynn Frank, Director w/enci State of Oregon Department of Energy gool ll sn T o oggg g 3 y,f
ENCLOSURE INFORMATION REQUESTED ON PWR FEEDWATER LINES (20-Day Response) Design NRC Request 1 Provide as-built piping or isometric drawings of the feedwater lines to steam generator sparger within Containment. Show details of the design such as dimensions, pipe schedule, support type and locations, pipe restraints, and valve (s). PGE Response Isometric Drawings EBB-3-1 and EBB-3-2, Attachment 1, show the feedwater lines up to the steam generator nozzles within the Containment. The isometrics indicate dimensions, pipe schedule, support type and location, and valves. Vendor drawings 717J36 and 1099J01, Attachment 2, provide the details of the steam generator feedwater nozzles and sparger within the steam denerator. Additionally, a list and the details of each pipe support for the feedwater lines inside Containment are provided as Attachment 3. NRC Request 2 Provide the results of any stress or fatigue analyses which were performed for this system. PGE Response The maximum stress values for the feedwater piping within Containment up to and including the steam generator nozzles are 16,459 psi and 17,321 psi for EBB-3-1 and EBB-3-2, respec-tively. These values correspond to approximately 0.5 of the allowable stresses for these lines. For a discussion on the stress and fatigue analyses for the feedwater nozzle itself, see Attachment 4 which has been excerpted from the Westinghouse Generic Stress Report for Series 51 Steam Generaters. Fabrication History NRC Request 1 Supply a list of the materials for the steam generator sparger, steam generator feedwater nozzles and feedwater piping within Containment.
PGE Response Requested materials are as follows: Steam generator sparger A-106B carbon steel Thermal sleeve A-106B carbon steel Steam generator feedwater nozzles ASME SA-508 Class 2 Schedule 80 Feedwater piping within Containment ASTM A-106B seamless Schedule 60 (14-in.) Feedwater piping fittings a. ASTM A-234 WPB Schedule 60 (14 in.) b. ASTM A-234 WPB Schedule 80 (16 in.) NRC Request 2 Provide the details of the welding process (es) used to make the nozzle-to pipe, pipe-to-sparger and piping welds. Include details of welding such as preheat, jnint configuration (include with or without backing ring), and postweld treatment, if any. PGE Response The welding processes used to join the feedwater pipe to steam generator nozzle and pipe joint welds are provided as. These procedures include preweld and prutweld treatment. Joint configuration for feedwater piping consists of buttwelds. L'o process is provided for the pipe-to-sparger in the steam generators because it is a slip-fit joint. The specific welding processes attached are as follows: Pipe-to-steam generator nozzle W-67 Pipe-to pipe W-6a, W-40, W-411 JTB/4kk3A5 Page 1 of 42 EBB HANGERS EBB-3-1 AND EBB-3-2 Drawing No. Page Drawing To. The stress intensities for the normal / upset conditions are all classified as primary plus secondary.

Fatigue Evaluation A fatigue evaluation has been performed and provided in the Westinghouse Generic Stress Report for Series 51 Steam Genera-tors. Based upon the total peak stresses for the different transients, Cuts A (inside), D (in and out) and E (in and out) were selected for fatigue evaluation. The principal stresses at these locations are tabulated in Table 17; the prinicipal stress differences are plotted in Figures 3 through 7 and tabulated in Tables 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26 of the Westinghouse Generic Stress Report for Series 51 Steam Generators. The =aximum stress ranges of the three stress differences were used to compile a total usage factor. The maximum usage factor was found to be U = 0.955. This is caused primarily by the large secondary stresses of the hot standby transient at Cut D on the inside of the nozzle. The usage factor is below the code allowable of 1.0. The usage factor at cuts not considered may be assumed to be zero due to the relatively low stress levels. The figure on Page 4 of this attachment shows how the usage factors vary throughout the no zzle. Any other transie..ts not evaluated would not cause any change in these usage factors.
