Subject:
Steam Generator Feedwater Piping Reference (b) requested information concerning the steam generator feedwater piping at Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station. This letter responds to the first four items of that request:
- 1. contains drawings for the feedwater piping inside containment. The piping is Schedule 80; the nozzle is machined to Schedule 80 dimensions.

The piping system was designed to Power Piping Code ANSI B31.1-1967. Deadweight stresses were limited to 1500 psi by design.

The feedwater sparger is not welded to any pressure retaining material. The feedwater piping is ASTM A106 Grade B; the feedwater nozzle is ASME SA-508 Class 1. '

The nozzle to pipe weld was performed using a GTAW root pass with a consumable insert followed by SMAW using 7018 electrodes.
The final welds were radiographed. Preheat and post weld heat treatment are not required for those materials. The weld joint geometry consists of a 37 degree bevel with a 1/16 inch land.
Since the nozzle thickness is greater then the Schedule 80 thickness for the feedwater pipe size, a 4 to 1 taper was used from the counterbore and outside dimension of the weld prep.
