SUMMARY

OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PROGRAM RESPECTING CONSTRUCTION OF GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION FOR SIX MONTHS EMDING APRIL 30, 1979 E

At the end of April,1979, construction of Units 1 and 2 was 79.5% and 10.1% _i complete, respectively. The entire construction project is 54.2% complete. In addition, the following items in Unit 1 have received considerable attention:

ceramic tile in the heat sinkscomplete,placementofstructuralsteel[orthe enclosure building of the containment building. The entire site was officially posted and the new administration building occupied. The generator rotor has been sent back to Germany for modification. Ranney well work is non-existent due to the high level of the Mississippi River. The Unit 2 structural steel erection is underway and the containment cylinder wall poured to elevacion 101' .

VEHICULAR MOVEMENT There were no "off limit" violations observed during the reporting period.

DUST CONTROL There were no obviously excessive dust control violations during the reporting period.

SM0KE COYrROL There , re no smoke control violations during the reporting period.

EROSION CONTROL Rain occurrad on fif ty-eight (58) separate occasions during the reporting period with an accumulated rainfall of 41.08 inches. Runoff samples were collected on sixteen (16) of these instances and reteirned co the laboratory for suspended solids analysis. Considerable erosion is prevalent in several areas but, due to the ,

extremely wet conditions, repairs have not yet been made. Repairs will be made as quickly as possible to take advantage of a full growing season.

Sd= mary of Environmental Protection Program Six Months Report Ending April 30, 1979 NOISE CONTROL There were no noise control violations during the reporting period. The exterior paging system has been placed in use and can be heard a great distance a5 away depending on the prevailing winds.

CHEMICAL & SOLID WASTE CONTROL ,

Nine (9) chemical and solid weste violations were observed during the reporting period. Seven (7) were minor oil spills that were cleaned up immediately with no oil reaching site streams, lakes, or the Mississippi River. Two (2) involved solid waste which was disposed of in the properly designated spoils area.

DEWATERING Considerable changes were observed in the ground water readings during the reporting period. Well OW29A had a decrease of 3.4 feet and an increase of 3.9 feet in November. Also an increase of 3.2 feet was observed in March and a decrease of 3.1 feet was observed in April. Well OW4A had an increase of 5.2 feet in November and an increase of 3.9 feet in December. Well OW202 had a reading in January for the first time since it was observed dry in July of 1978.

Well OW7 had a decrease of 4,7 feet in April. Wells OW4, OW4A, P4, and OW69A vere not read in March or April because of severe backwater flooding from the Mississippi River.

VEGETATION Monthly vegetation surveys were made around the site periphery to detect veget-ational stresses due to construction activities. No obvious abnormalities that could be attributed to contruction activities were evident.

TRANSMISSION LINES An aerial survey conducted in November revealed considerable erosion of the slide area adjacent to the railroad near the 115 Kv Port Gibson to Grand Gulf 2284 200

A similar survey conducted r.t the same time revealed no major erosion of the 500 Kv Franklin Transmission Line. Construction of the 500 Kv Baxter Wilson Transmission Line continued during the reporting period. Clearing and burning was ccmpleted and foundatior. work was well under way. Tower erection was begun during the reporting period.
