-Longitudinal Weld Defects in ASME SA-312 type 304 stainlecs steel pipe spools manufactured by Youngstown Welding and Engineering Company Gentlemen:
The subject bulletin requested that se provide certain infomation relative to the pipe conforming to SA-312 type 304 at Calvert Cliffs. Our records indicate that we have some pipe spools prefabricated by M. W.
Kellog and also some field fabricated supports of stainless steel pipe ASTM 312 type 304, manufactured by Youngstown Welding and Engineering Co=pany in 1972. The material is used in the low pressure safety injection system.
Attachment I to this letter provides the infomation requested under item 2 of the bulletin.
The following will be our program for volumetric examination:
1.
Review radiographs of all circumferential welds in the entire length of subject piping.
Since there are twenty-one radio;raphs in forty-eight feet of Youngstown pipe and each radiograph cosrrs approximately two or four inches of longitudinal seam, this review will screen approximately seven feet of the forty-eight feet of.ongitudinal weld.
The sample examined is censidered to be conservative. The location of radiographs also covers the high stress areas of the pipe.
2.
The acceptance criteria of ANSI B31.7 will be applied to the examination of longitudinal welds which are described in item 1 above.

If the acceptance criteria of B 317 is not met for any veld, we vill volumetrically examine two additional spots of six inches length in the vicinity of the questionable location. If the two additional spots examined meet the acceptance criteria of B 31.7 the defective weld dis-closed by the original radiograph may be repaired. If either of the additional spots examined show unacceptable defects, we will d.evelop another program for the evaluation and the disposition of the defective pipe.
We believe this program has sound engineering basis to identify and correct any welding defect in longitudinal welds of piping manufactured by Youngstown Welding and Engineering Ccupany.
This effort outlined above is currently in progress and we expect to co=plete the radiographic review within thirty days.
