v, January 30, 1979 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 NRC DOCKETS 50-321, 50-366 OPERATING LICENSES DPR-57, NPF-5 EDWIN I. HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1, 2 PHYSICAL SECURITY SYSTEM Gentlemen:
The Commission's regulations (10 CFR 73.55) cu rently require licensees of operating nuclear power reactors to comply with increased physical protection requirements by February 23, 1979.
Georgia Power Company has worked toward expeditious and full implementation of these requirements. However, due to delays in receiving long lead-time equip-ment, the installation and testing of certain equipment has been impeded.
Consequently, it is now apparent that we cannot be in full compliance with the upgraded physical protection requirements by February 23, 1979.
In consideration of:
(1) The need for extension of implementation time; (2) the lack of urgency to require upgraded physical protection; and (3) the adequacy of security measures now in effect, Georgia Power Company hereby requests a four-week extension to the full implementation requirement of 10 CFR 73.55 from February 23, 1979 to March 23, 1979.
Sincerely, p
u f -) F. Whitmer aM w
