0 NON-DESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION REVIEW SROUP MlETING SMRRY A meeting of the Non-Destructiv'e Examination (NDE) Review Group members with staff from Battelle-Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), the University of Michigan and with Professor G. Irwin of the University of Maryland was held on November 19,1976 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. This meeting had been announced during the November 11, 1976 Review Group meeting and appropriate documents for review were distributed at that time. The members were requested (attachment 1) to prepare written review and connents on the PNL analysis-before-test (ABT) document which had been distributed to thera on November 11, 1976. Also, because the November 11, 1976 meeting showed a need for more frequent contact between Review Group members and the NDE research contractcrs (especially the University of Michigan at this time), the University of Michigan ir.esti-gators on the synthetic array ultrasonic imaging project were requested to attend the meeting and make a presentation of their results and UT techniques so that the group could critically question and understand them.
The attendance list is given in attachment 2.
The PNL staff gave detaileo presentations of the ABT as regards the purpose of the investigation, the specific tests, specimens and materials to be used and the acoustic emission instrumentation and parameters to be used for the investigation.
Individual questions and comments from Professor Irwin and the Review Group members showed an interest in the following items:
1.
Free surface effect by using surface notch specimens; 2.
Study of acoustic emission emanating from surface vs that emanating from central regions of a specimen;

3.
Polishing some specimens to allow correlation of the fonnation of luders bands and attendant acoustic emission; 4.
Performing the test described in Figure 3 of the ABT for study of Kaiser effects under possible reactor operating conditions last; 5.
Performing a Kaiser effect test with a fatigue crack grown through a previously plastic yielded section.
These matters will be considered by the NRC project manager in the management of the PNL work. Opinions were expressed by tho'se present that (1) the PNL progran on AE will generate much needed results for application of acoustic amission to on-line reactor monitoring and (2) that the program is well structured (and thought out) to meet this objectivefromthematerials,materialstesting(includingfracture mechanics), and AE point of view.

O The University of Michigan investigators made a presentation on the methods, procecures, and techniques for their synthetic aperture ultra-sonic imaging system and presented infomation on its capability.
