t CORROSION REVIEW GROUP NRC MEMBE3S MEETING

SUMMARY

A meeting of the Corrosion Review Group (CRG) NRC members was held Dec. ember 20,1976 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in Room P-110 of the Phillips Buildina in Bethesda, Maryland. Present were:

B. D. Liaw, DOR; U. Potapovs, DSS; J. Rajan, DSS; W. J. Collins, IE; J. Muscara, RSR; and R. Stuart D0R. Absent were F. Almeter, DOR and A. Taboada, SD. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss (a) water chemistry requirements and control and (b) specifications for purchase of test material tubing for use in the Steam Generator Tube Integrity (SGTI) program sponsored by NRC at Battelle Northwest Laboratory (BNW).

It was the opinion of the CRG members that:

1.

Water chemistry variations within typical chemistry ranges would not affect the test results since the tests are short-term; 2.

the same water chemistry can be used for the primary and secondary side of the test set up; 3.

water chemistry with control of pH, oxygen contant, conductivity, chloride ion concentration and hydrazine conten: vould be adequate; 4.

adequate levels of control are as follows: pH, between 8 and 9.5; oxygen, <0.5 ppm; conductivity, <2 umhos/cm; chloride ion concentra-tion, <0.1 ppm; hydrazine content to control oxygen at given level; 5.

tubing material should be bought to ASME SB-163 and meeting only one steam generator manufacturer's additional specifications.

When results are available on the effect of strength level on defected tube burst and collapse, the group should consider whether a small amount of tube testing of a different manufacturer's specifications is warranted.
