Annual Report From the University of Weshington Facility License R-73 A.
A Narrative Summary of Operating Experien:e for the Period January 1, 1979 - December 31, 1979 The University of Washington Nuclear Reactor was operated for 143 hours0.00166 days
0.0397 hours
2.364418e-4 weeks
5.44115e-5 months
(baseline to shutdown) and generated 5505 KWH of energy. The 97 experimental runs consisted of sample irradiation for neutron activation analysis, isotope production, laboratory experiments, class demonstrations, anomaly detection experiments and calibrations.
B.
Unscheduled Shutdowns 1.
At power Date Power Level Cause Jan. 23 1 Watt Safety Amp. (a)
May 4 75 KW Log N (b)
Oct. 25 96 KW Safety Anp.. (a)
(a)
Trips result from photodiode isolation falling below operational level due to noise on 110 VAC line.
(b)
Log N' tripped when operator demonstrating high temperature alarm to students caused noise in system.
2.
Not at power December 11, 1979 - January 8, 1980 - Water accidently spilled into graphite moderator. Operations were suspended until the reactivity worth of the absorbed water was less then -0.4%Ak/k.
Prevention by better orientation procedures plus observation and practice of experimentors.
C.
Corrective and Preventative Maintenance Having Safety Significance 1.
Routine calibration and maintenance as scheduled.
2.
Changed gaskets on fuel box covers and inspected core region.
3.
Drying out graphite moderator after accidental spillage of water from reactor top.
(See unscheduled shutdowns.)
D.
Discussion of Changes Carried Out Pursuant to 10 CFR 50.59 1.

Radioactive Releases to the Environs 1.
Emptied a retention tank (1440 gallons) to sanitary sewer May 8, 1979 with total activity less then 0.012 microcuries.
2.
The Argon 41 released to the environments from the facility during 1979 was measured to be 8.5 curies F.
Environmental Surveys Outside the Facility 1.
None for 1979 G.
There were no significant exposures up to November of 1979, i.e., above 500 mrem.
