INSTITUTE (617) 753-1411 January 23, 1980 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Coninission Washington, DC 20555 Re: Docket No. 50-134 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Sir:

On July 16, 1979 Worcester Polytechnic Institute submitted to the NRC a request for a 20-year renewal of License #R-61. On September 27, 1979, copies of the WPI Environmental Appraisal and Safety Analysis Report to-gether with fiscal statements were forwarded to the NRC in support of the renewal application. We are presently awaiting action by the NRC on these materials.

The WpI Open Pool Reactor security provisions have been undergoing extensive revin...

Proposed changes will be discussed with appropriate NRC officials at the earliest possible date.

Our annual major overhaul of the reactor control system was completed in June 1979. Minor repairs were made to our boral safety blades as explained in a letter to Mr. Raymond, our NRC compliance representative, dated June 21, 1979.

Otherwise all rechanical components were found to be in excellent condition.

In October of 1979 an external power interruption caused the reactor console to be shutdown for several hours and an electronic com-ponent failed in our high voltage supply when power was restored. The resulting voltage surge damaged several other interconnected components. As a result, much of our console equipment was given a very thorough overhaul and at the present time all console components appear to be in exceptionally good condition.

We have had no major transfers of radioactive material to or from the WPI Reactor Facility during the past year and have had no radiation exposures to personnel or radiation releases in excess of normal conditions which are essential at background levels.

If we can furnish any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
