O Wisconsin Electnc exca coup >nr 231 W. MICHIGAN, P.O. BOX 2046 MILWAUKEE, WI 53201 January 7, 1980 Mr. A. Schwencer, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 1 Division of Operating Reactors U. S. NUCLEAR RLULATORY COMMISSION Washington, D. C. 20555

Dear Mr. Schwencer:

TURBINE ROTOR INSPECTION POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 1 DOCKET 50-266 This is to acknowledge receipt, on January 5, of your letter of December 27 in respect to low-pressure turbine rotor inspection at Point Beach Nuclear Plant, Unit 1.

As you know, we are preparing a report of the inspection of the low-pressure turbine discs conducted during the October 1979 refueling and an analysis of the indications found during that inspection. Based on this inspection and analysis, no further inspection of these discs is justified in the near term.

We are planning to perform a further inspection of the Unit 1 discs in the fall of 1980. We believe that when you receive our report on the October 1979 inspection, you will agree with us that an inspection prior to the fall of 1980 is not warranted.

In order that this matter not delay operations of Point Beach Nuclear Plant, Unit 1, we would request that you meet with us on this subject during the week of February 4, 1980. We will have provided to you prior to the time of that meeting the report of our previous investigations. Please call Mr. D. K. Porter or Mr. C. W. Fay of our office to confirm the time, place, and parti-cipants for this meeting.

Very truly yours,

^ o . -,
