Subject:
REPORT ON THREE MLIE ISLMD NUCIEAR STATION UNIT 1
Dear Dr. Seaborg:
At its ninety-sixth meeting, on April 4-6, 1968, the Advisory Jon:mittee on Reactor Safeguards completed its re-examination of the application by Metropolitan Edison Company to construct the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 1.
The Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit I was the subject of a report to you dated January 17, 1968. The review was re-opened at the ninety-fifth ACRS meeting, on March 7-9, 1968, in consideration of an additional subalttal by the applicant evaluating further the ef fects of the proxinity of the Olmsted State Airport.
The Cor aittee has had the benefit of discussions with repre-sentatives of Metropolitan Edison Company, Babcock and Wilcox Company, Gilbert Associates, and the AEC Regulatory Staff and c
their consultants. The additional documents submitted are listed in this report.
Although the probability of an airplane hitting the station is very swall, the applicant has undertaken to provide principal structures and components of the station with the capability y
of withstanding aircraf t strike loadings over a range of condi-i d
tions, including effects such as secondary missiles, f re, an pressure and temperature effects. The reactor building, control building, fuel handling building, auxiliary building, and interme-diate building will have the necessary modifications to assure the capability of bringing the plant to a safe shutdown condition.
