f f iu.m wu MEMORANDUM FOR: Roger J. Mattson, Director, DSS, NRR Victor Stello, Jr. Director, DOR, NRR FROM:

Anthony R. Buhl, Director, PAS, RES

SUBJECT:

Revisions to TAP A-30 PAS has revised Task Action Plan A-30, " Adequacy of Safety Related DC Power Supplies." The revision has been coordinated with the Power Systems Branch (F. Rosa and R. Fitzpatrick) which recently transferred responsibility for this generic issue to PAS. The revised TAP is attached for your review.

Itemized below is a summary of the revisions to the TAP.

1.

The approach has been revised to reflect a probabilistic analysis of a DC system which just meets minimum requirements. The results of this analysis will be evaluated before determining whether to pursue details of the capability for manual actions.

2.

The completion date is now estimated to be October 1979 but is dependent upon the results of the analysis.

If the analysis shows a problem or is unable to come to a conclusion, further work and funding would be required.

3.

Technical Assistance has been added. A contract has been let to Sandia Laboratories (with a subcontract to Evaluation Associates) for $30K. A total program cost of $60K in FY 79 is anticipated.

4.

The scope of the TAP includes reconsideration of four items from NUREG-0305 identified as having relied on analyses or data used in WASH-1400.

5.

Lead Organization and Task Manager have been changed to indicate PAS responsibility.

In addition to the changes in the tasks, revisions have been made in identified DSS / DOR support required to complete the TAP. We request 1750 196 CONTACT:
