SCOPE OF WORK, TASK B-1 Scope of Work:

INEL is requested to provide a technical evaluation of the nondestructive methods and techniques described in the document, " Pressurizer Surge Line Intermediate Pipe Rupture Protection, McGuire Nuclear Station, Units I and II," dated December 14, 1977. A specific comparison is not required of the relative merits of pipe break protection versus augmented inservice inspection.

The technical evaluation should consider the effectiveness of the examination method, examination procedure and calibration block material to detect the flaw sizes in the evaluation standards for the intermediate break locations in the pressurizer surge line defined in Sections 4.0 and 5.0.

An estimate of the minimum detectable flaw sizes for a fatigue crack using the described ultrasonic technique would be meaningful sup-porting information. An estimate of an appropriate inspection interval would be desirable.

Comments and recommendations should be prepared based on the use of manual nondestructive examination methods. Supplemental or alternate techniques, such as surface examination or leakage detection systems, can be considered by INEL to increase the assurance of detecting the rejectable flaws defined in the ASME Code,Section XI. The recomenda-tions can include basic fracture mechanics considerations to estimate the appropriate augmented ISI program inspection interval.

Revisions and Amendments:

Revisions and amendments to the review document are anticipated.

Task B-1 should remain open until September 1,1978 or a final NRC determination on the pressurizer surge line, whichever is the earlier date.

Scheduled Milestones:

1.

A written technical evaluation should be received within 30 days of receipt of this request.

2.

Milestones for revisions or amendments will be determined as necessary based on the required Scope of Work.

Technical Reporting Requirements:

1.

The written evaluation submitted based on the review document and subsequent revisions or anendments should be a single reproducible copy in letter report form.

2.

A final summary report on Task B-1 is required upon completion of the task and should be a single reproducible copy in letter report form.
