December 12, 1979 Mr James G Keppler Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region III US Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 DOCKET 50-155 - LICENSE DPR BIG ROCK POINT PLANT - RESPONSE TO IE BULLETIN 79-18, AUDIBILITY PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED ON EVACUATION OF PERSONNEL FROM HIGH NOISE AREAS Consumers Power Company's response to IE Bulletin 79-18 ( Audibility Problems Encountered on Evacuation of Personnel from High-Noise Areas) is as follevs:
At Big Rock Point, a site emergency is annunciated by means of 12 sirens which are interlocked with the plant public address system. A test of this system was conducted on November 18, 1979. The plant was at 82% power with all normal plant equipment in service. The test identified five areas where ths pl:.at siren or public address system were marginal in audibility. As a result of this test, a request for modification has been issued and the marginal areas vill be updated as parts are procured. This i= expected to be ccmplete by approximately Maren 1, 1980. The five margf aal areas found in the Novetaber 18, 1979, test are listed belov.

Cutside cable penetratieri tools (due to :=cently installed insulation).

Fuel cask loading area (due to recently installed roll-up doors).

The heating boiler room (due to high background noise).

The new office trailers (recently added to site).
5 The bypass valve hydraulic pump area (due to high background noise).
When the modifications are complete, the system vill be rechecked.
