,:.C WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 o, p g udf November 4, 1979 Docket No. 50-254 and 50-265 Mr. Steve F. Sheridan 1314 1/2 - 44 Street Rock Island, Illinois 61201

Dear Mr. Sheridan:

This is in response to your request of Hovember 7,1979 for information on nuclear waste disposal facilities at Quad Cities Station.

There are no nuclear waste disposal facilities at Quad Cities.

Perhaps what you are referring to is a facility being constructed for temporary storage of low level solid wastes. Normally, low level solid wastes produced in plant operation are sealed in metal drums (about 20 to 40 drums per week.) These are shipped offsite for burial within a few days after being sealed up. Recently, the availability of low level burial sites to Quad Cities Station was suspended for a period of several weeks.

During that time, the accumulating low level wastes, after drunning, had to be temporarily stored onsite while awaiting shipment.

Since that time, the Station has begun construction of additional low level waste storage space to assure adequate storage capability should other delays in shipment occur in the future.

While the radiological exposure of handling and storing these drums of waste is low, every effort is made to minimize unnecessary exposure.

The facility now being constructed is designed to minimize such exposure.

Under current applicable regulations (see 10 CFR Part 50.59, Code of Federal Regulations), this activity by the licensee does not require a licensing action or a public hearing, so none are planned.

We hope this reply satisfies your request.

Sincerely,

'ss Thomas /

Ippolito, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #3 Division of Operating Reactors 1689 184 7
