Docket No. 99900331/79-01 NRC letter, dated October 17, 1979 Gentlemen:

In the referenced letter, you suggested that a non-dest;;uctive examination or engineering analysis might be necessary to demonstrate the acceptability of the C-2 weld on the NAC-lC cask.

Pursuant to your suggestion, an ultrasonic examination of the C-2 weld was performed on Nove::.ber 5, 1979 by the U.S. Testing Company at the facilities of Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. in West Valley, New York, where the cask is temporarily located.

Messrs. W. M. McNeill and V. H. Hunter of your office were present to witness the examination.

The results of the ultrasonic examination verified the integrity of the C-2 weld.

This examination, together with a re-evaluation of the C-2 weld radiograph..d radiographs of the test specimen prepared for the ultrasonic examination, also confirmed the explanation for the indication observed on the C-2 weld radiograph.

The indication was shown to result from the geometry of the fillet weld joint attaching the inner cylinder to the back-up ring, a non-structural component of the cask.
