VIRGIL C. SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT NO.1
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MEETING WITH SOUTH CAROLINA ELECTRIC AND GAS COMPANY ON NOVEMBER 7, 1979 On November 7,1979 we met with representatives of South Carolina Electric and Gas Company (SCE&G) and Gilbert / Commonwealth (Gilbert) to discuss the request for information issued to SCE&G as a result of the site visit for the fire protection review. The persons attending the meeting are listed in the Enclosure.
The fire protection request for information was issued to the applicants by a letter dated October 22, 1979. During the meeting, SCE8G presented its proposed For Items 3 through 20, it appeared that with minor modifications responses.
SCE&G's proposed response would resolve the staff position or concern.
Items 1 and 2 deal with protection of redundant cables, components and electri-cal equipment from exposure fires. During the meeting, SCE&G described the reevaluation that was being done to respond to our position.
In the re-evalua-tion, SCE8G had identified five groups of redundant components required for safe shutdown where two redundant components could be affected by a single exposure fire. The groups of redundant components were:
1.
High pressure injection pumps room coolers, 2.
Component cooling water pinps, 3.
Power transfonners for the pressurizer heaters, 4.
Service water ptraps, and 5.
Air supply fans for the service water pumphouse.
SCE&G concluded that where other redundant components are located in the same fire area, the layout of shield or structural walls precluded an exposure fire from affecting redundant components.
For the components listed above, we dis-cussed the fire protection alternatives that would be acceptable. For the pressurizer heater power transformers, the staff and SCE&G discussed on whether these transformers were essential for safe shutdown. We told SCE&G that we would have to consider this further and than get get back to them on this 1664 163 matter.

fg With regard to the separation and protection of redundant instrumentation con-trol, and power cables, SCE&G is proposing an alternate means of shutting down the plant assuning a fire in the control room or the cable spreading areas.
The alternate means would include the control room evacuation panels and opera-tion at motor control centers. SCE&G had prepared a list of the ' equipment and cables that would require protection. Each fire area would be examined to assure (1) that redundant cables were separated by 20 feet or (2) that fire barriers are erected to protect one of the redundant cables. We stated that depending on the fire loading of a specific location, they should consider increasing the separation. SCE&G stated that their responses to Items 3 through 20 would be submitted in December 1979. An outline of their approach for Items 1 and 2 could be submitted then, but that the detailed analysis would not be ready until the first quarter of 1980.
