Page 1 of 1 Docket No. 50-338 Report No. LER 79-158/01T-0

Description of Event

On December 11, 1979, with the unit in a cold shutdown, Stone & Webster informed Vepco that during the review required by IEC 79-08 it had discovered that a non-seismically qualified switch had been used in a seismic category I system.

The switch concerned is PDS-HV1228A and B which is used in the con-denser water controls for the control and relay room air conditioning system.

Probable Consequences of Occurrence A probable consequence of this event is that the switch could fail during an earthquake and jeopardize the proper operation of the control and relay room air condicioners.

The health and safety of the general public have not been endangered by this occurrence.

Identical pressure dif ferential switches are used in Unit 2's air conditioning system and is therefore simi-larly affected.

Cause of Occurrence The reason for the non-seismically qualified switch being used in a seismic category I system is not known at this time.

Immediate Corrective Action

The pressure dif ferential switch is prest itly being re-evaluated to determine if replacement is necessary.

Scheduled Corrective Action If replacement is required, an equivalent switch with seismic qualifica-tions will be installed in place of PDS-HV1728 A and B.

Actions Taken to Prevent Recurrence No further actions are required.
