DEC 7 1979 The Honorable James R. Thompson Governor of Illinois Springfield, IL 62706

Dear Governor Thompson:

As you may be aware, Mr. E. Erie Jones of the Illinois Emei 7ency Services and Disaster Agency was appointed to an Interorganizational sivisory Committee on Radiological Emergency Response Planning and Prepuredness.

This Committee, with 4 members each from the flational Association of State Directors for Disaster Preparedness (recently renamed the flational Emergency fianagement Association), the U.S. Civil Defense Council, and the Conference of (State) Radiation Control Program Directors, operates under the aegis of this latter organization and is chaired by f1r. James L.

fiontgomery of the Colorado Department of Health.

Since the Committee was formed, a little over two years ago, it has served as a useful sounding board and common forum for these three major national organizations to exchange points of view and to review and comment on proposed and ongoing Federal programs relating to radiological emergency planning and preparedness supportive of nuclear facilities and for transportation accidents involving radioactive material.

I would like to acknowledge ltr. Jones' valuable participation on the Committee. Also I would like to thank you for allowing Mr. Jones to spend the time necessary to attend the meetings several times each year.

Sincerely, I

s j Robert G. Ryan, Dirdctor Office of State Programs cc:
