ff,)ff, May 10, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--

PNS-79-46 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

Commonwealth Edison Company Byron Station Docket No. 50-454 and 50-455 Byron, Illinois

Subject:

BOMB THREAT At 10:35 a.m., on May 10, 1979, a secretary at the FBI Resident Office at Rockford, Illinois received a telephone call from an unidentified male who said, "This is is in regard to the Byron f;uclear Plant.

Are you a secretary, well then write this down.

At Elevation 401 and Elevation 451 sometime today it will happen.

We have a bomb that's going to go off."

He then hung up.

The contents of the threat was conveyed by the FBI to the Plant Superintendent of Byron Station and to the Sheriff of Ogle County, Illinois.

The latter dispr.tched a squad car to the site.

l;o evacuation of the site was undertaken. A search of the plant was made but no devices were discovered.

Construction activities are continuing.

Byron Station is a dual-unit 3ite under construction approximately 555 complete.

There is no fuel on-site.

f;o press release is planned by the licensee or by RIII.

The State of Illinois has been notified.

The IAT has been nctified.

RIII, (Illinois) received notification of this event at 12:30 p.m.
