  • vl PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION January 12, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--

PNS-79-02 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest sianificance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

FACILITY: Waterford Steam Electric Station, Unit No. 3 Louisiana Power & Light Company (DN 50-382)

St. Charles Parrish, Louisiana

SUBJECT:

B0MB THREAT At 1:30 p.m., on January 11, 1979, the licensee's switchboard operator received a bomb threat from an on-site extension telephone.

The caller, apparently in a male voice, said, "A bomb will go off at at 2:00 o' clock."

The switchboard operator was of the opinion that the voice was that of the same male that called the. threats on November 22 and 27,1978 and December 21,.1978.

The on-site extension telephone was traced to the minus 35 foot level of the Reactor Auxiliary Building shortly after the call was received.

Several workmen in the area of the phone were identified for investiga-tion.

Additional details were not available at the time of notification.

The licensee elected not to evacuate the construction site.

A search was ini tia ted.

No bomb was found nor did one detonate.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff Department was notified at the time of the initial call. The New Orleans office of the FBI was notified by Plant Security.

Region IV (Arlington, Texas) received preliminary notification at 2:00 p.m.

from the RIV principal inspector who was on site at the time.

No press release was made or planned by the licensee or the NRC.

The site construction progress is currently reported as 54 percent completed.

There is no SNM on site.

Information is current as of 3:00 p.m., January 11, 1979.

The IAT was notified.
