Dear Ms. Heyman:
This is in reply to your letter of November 1,1979, requesting infomation on nuclear energy.
Enclosed is an excerpt from the Draft Environmental Statement related to construction of New England Power Units 1 and 2 (NRC report NUREG-0529 of May 1979).
Section 9 considered a number of alternative sources of energy and concluded that only coal was a viable alternative to nuclear energy for the proposed power plant. Then a conparison was made of the health effects and the economics of nuclear and coal-fired power plants, and it was con-cluded that the probable lifetime generating costs and the health effects to the general population both favored the nuclear plant over the coal-fired alternative.
Similar analyses for plants in a number of other regions of the country have resulted in the same conclusions, although the economics of nuclear and coal-fired plants vary with the geographic location.
Sincerely,
,gd x
Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
